How the comparison works
Annual energy cost comes from annual miles divided by each vehicle’s efficiency. EV grid energy is increased for charging losses. Maintenance is a user-entered per-mile estimate so the calculator does not depend on a proprietary repair database.
Annual savings = gas energy + maintenance − EV electricity − maintenance
Break-even = EV purchase premium ÷ annual operating savings
What is not included
Insurance, financing, taxes, resale value, public-charging session fees and incentives are not included. Put any incentive directly into the applicable purchase price. For a complete budget, use the cost-of-ownership calculator.
