Two horsepower definitions

Specifications may use mechanical hp or metric PS. They differ: one mechanical hp is approximately 745.70 W, while one metric PS is 735.49875 W. One kilowatt is 1,000 W. Select the unit actually used by the source specification.

mechanical hp = kW × 1000 ÷ 745.6998715822702; PS = kW × 1000 ÷ 735.49875

Conversion example

100 kW equals approximately 134.10 mechanical hp or 135.96 metric PS. For reverse conversion, select hp or PS explicitly because the factors differ. This changes the units of an existing power value; it does not infer power from engine displacement.

Rounding and measurement point

Intermediate calculations retain precision and only the display is rounded. Unit conversion does not reconcile crankshaft versus wheel power or differing test standards. When comparing vehicles, check both the unit and how the original power was measured.

Frequently asked questions

Are HP and PS identical?

No. A mechanical hp is approximately 1.39% larger than a metric PS.

Can kWh be converted into horsepower?

Not directly: kWh measures energy and hp measures power. A time interval is also required.
