GVWR and payload

GVWR is the maximum rated loaded vehicle weight. Subtract actual vehicle weight with its equipment, then occupants, cargo and trailer hitch load. If the base scale weight already includes people or cargo, do not add them again. Aftermarket equipment reduces the available allowance.

remaining payload = GVWR − base vehicle weight − occupants − cargo − hitch load

Payload example

A 7,000 lb GVWR minus a 5,200 lb vehicle leaves 1,800 lb before added loads. Occupants at 400 lb, cargo at 500 lb and hitch load at 300 lb use 1,200 lb. The loaded weight is 6,400 lb, leaving 600 lb below GVWR. A negative remainder indicates an exceedance.

Why total weight is not the only limit

Also check axle ratings, tire limits, hitch limits and load distribution. An axle can be overloaded even when total weight is below GVWR. This tool does not retrieve VIN ratings or replace weighing; use vehicle labels, the manual and actual measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Does the entire trailer weight count as payload?

The vertical hitch load counts toward vehicle weight. The entire trailer weight also matters for towing and GCWR limits.

Can I use kilograms?

The arithmetic is unit-consistent, but this form is labeled in lb. Convert your measurements to lb before entering them.
