How wheel offset changes fitment
Wheel offset is the distance between the wheel centerline and the hub mounting face. Positive offset moves the wheel farther inward. Lower offset generally moves it toward the fender. Width matters at the same time: a wider wheel can move both its inner and outer edges even when the offset stays unchanged.
Inner clearance and outer poke
Inner clearance measures how the new wheel barrel moves relative to the suspension. A positive inward change means the barrel sits closer to struts or control arms. Outer poke measures movement toward the fender. Check both values because changing width and offset can improve one side while reducing space on the other.
Inner position = wheel width ÷ 2 + offset
Outer position = wheel width ÷ 2 − offset
Wheel offset vs. backspacing
Offset uses millimeters from the wheel centerline. Backspacing measures from the hub face to the rear wheel edge, usually in inches. The calculator estimates backspacing by adding one inch to nominal wheel width for both rim flanges. Actual wheels vary, so confirm manufacturer dimensions before ordering.

Does a lower offset make wheels stick out?
Usually yes. With the same wheel width, lowering offset moves the wheel outward. A width change can further increase or reduce the final position.
How much offset difference is safe?
There is no universal safe number. Suspension, fenders, steering geometry, tire size and load all matter. Compare the calculated movement with measured clearance on the vehicle.
Is the backspacing result exact?
It is an estimate because nominal wheel width excludes the flanges. Confirm physical wheel dimensions and brake clearance with the manufacturer.
