Comparing two actual quotes

Start with the all-in prices of both offers: a finance discount can differ from a cash discount. The financed purchase price should already include common purchase taxes and charges. The separate fee field is only for additional financing costs not already included in that price.

finance total = down payment + upfront finance fees + monthly payment × months

Example with a finance discount

Suppose the cash quote is $30,000, the finance quote $29,000, the down payment $5,000 and the extra fee $200. At zero interest the financed total is $29,200, which is $800 below the cash quote. At a positive rate, interest is added, showing whether the discount still offsets financing cost.

What this comparison excludes

A positive difference means financing costs more in total payments; a negative difference means it costs less. This is a nominal comparison, excluding inflation, investment returns, liquidity needs, future taxes and rate changes. An exact repayment schedule requires the contract and its interest-accrual convention.

Frequently asked questions

Is financing always more expensive?

Not necessarily: prices and discounts can differ. Compare total payments rather than only the rate or vehicle sticker price.

Are returns on retained cash included?

No. Returns and their risk require a separate scenario. This tool compares direct purchase payments.
